How to get there

From São Paulo take the Fernão Dias (BR 381, in direction to Belo Horizonte). Approx. 5 km after the border of SP/MG turn right to  Extrema. Cross the town. Short after a Petrol Station on the left, the road turns into a dirt road. Follow this road approx. 21 km (on bifurcations keep left) until you 'll reach the river.

This nice slight will let your heart beat faster - anticipated joy or nervosism... ?

Character

The Rio Jaguari is a small river. In the first third, it has nearly permanent slope, after that longer stretches of flat water with some rapids in-between are following. Three drops, where the river takes down most of its gradient of 9 °/°°, form the highlight of the river.

Flow information

To be inquired at the Rafting Company Radix: (+35) 34 35 58 01 / 34 35 21 93

Put-In  / Take-Out

When arriving, short after you will see the first rapids/waterfall beside the roads, there is an new construction of a small house at the right of the road (behind it there is the "Barriga", see last picture) - this is the take out. To the put-in continue the road until 1,5 km after the bridge over the river, until a small house appears at the left. Short after this house the road leaves the river with a sharp bend to the left.

Difficulty

WW II-III (IV-, VI !, IV-)

... this will come latest when you will reach the edge of the slight ! After  approx. 2 km on nice rapids, you will reach the first spot with WW IV. If you want to scout, you may stop at the rock at the right on top.

After the slight, it is going on with nice rapids...

Almost one km after the slight, direct after the small bridge which is crossing the river, you should take care ! Stay at the left side of the river and stop before the coming slope. A small cataract is following, which ends in a U-type fall with a strong hydraulic. We always portaged here, even though it may be runnable - but with a big risk to injure !

Jürgen behind the class VI spot

From here on, it becomes a little  bit more quiet. Flat stretches are interrupted with easy rapids. After a sharp bend to the left, there is a small drop, which normally gets you in the vertical. After that, when the river is passing a rapid in a narrow part, there will be a sharp bend to the right, and after that there is another 50 m of rapid with nice waves and hydraulics. Another flat part is following until there will appear an "edge" after a sharp bend to the left.

The "queda livre" - boof good, otherwise it gets bumpy.

The last 500 m will need again your attention. The total sequence of drops may be evaluated with class IV-. Take the firs drop in the main current left. The second drop may be run either very right on the slight or on the left, going over the "queda livre". Short after that there comes the "barriga", and with a good land support this drop will be followed by a cold beer  ;-)

The best line in the "barriga" is in the middle right. On the very left there is a strong hydraulic.
